The economy of the past decade has driven the prices for regular market apartment homes out of reach for thousands of families and individuals. Sometimes called "the working poor," families may indeed have two incomes. However, these are typically lower wages and cannot keep pace with today's high market rental rates. With few affordable housing options, families are forced to live in substandard or derelict housing, and often in crime-ridden neighborhoods.
Volunteers of America Carolinas is responding to this critical housing need for families by developing, to date, several affordable long-term apartment homes in communities with supportive on-site services for parents and children.
